Rosarium Philosophorum ALCHEMICAL

cited in 20 emblems

The Rosarium Philosophorum (Rose Garden of Philosophers) is a major fourteenth-century alchemical compilation attributed to Pseudo-Arnald of Villanova, widely circulated in manuscript and print as a compendium of practical and symbolic alchemical wisdom. De Jong (1969) shows that Maier draws from the Rosarium the geometric circle-square-triangle formula central to Emblem XXI and the sapiential-biblical framework of Emblems XXVI and XXVII, where Proverbs is accessed not directly but through the Rosarium's mediation. Tilton (2003) further argues that the Rosarium's Aristotelian elemental transmutation scheme, rather than a Paracelsian reading, best explains Maier's use of these emblems.
