Rubedo

The Reddening

"The Stone is red as blood, soft as wax, heavy as gold." — pseudo-Lull, Testamentum

The fourth and final stage: the white stone is reddened by fermentation with gold to produce the Philosopher's Stone or Red Tincture. Sol presides; sanguine vitality perfected; the chemical wedding consummated; the Rebis-hermaphrodite achieved. In Atalanta Fugiens this is the staining of white roses by Adonis's blood (XLI), the standing hermaphrodite (XXXVIII), the multiplication of the Stone.
