Five Nymphs Meeting Poliphilo
NARRATIVE e1r · p.66
From the 1499 Aldine first edition (University of Seville copy, via Internet Archive)
Five nymphs in classical dress approach Poliphilo in a garden. One extends a hand in greeting.
In the Narrative
Poliphilo meets the five senses personified as nymphs. Their names encode the Greek words for each sense. This begins the section of the HP most explicitly concerned with sensory knowledge and pleasure.
