Alchemical Hands in the Hypnerotomachia Poliphili

Fritz Saxl (1890-1948), the Austrian-British art historian and director of the Warburg Institute, published a 1937 study identifying an HP scene in a painting by the Ferrarese artist Garofalo. This discovery demonstrated the HP's direct influence on Italian Renaissance painting and visual culture.
