Alchemical Hands in the Hypnerotomachia Poliphili

Christian Huelsen (1858-1935), a German archaeologist and topographer of ancient Rome, published the first systematic study of the HP's woodcut illustrations in 1910. His Le illustrazioni della Hypnerotomachia Poliphili identified the classical architectural sources for the book's monuments, columns, and triumphal arches, establishing the foundation for all subsequent architectural analysis of the HP.
