Alchemical Hands in the Hypnerotomachia Poliphili

Aldus Manutius (c. 1449-1515) was the Venetian printer who published the HP in 1499, producing what is widely regarded as the most elaborately illustrated incunabulum in the history of printing. The HP stands apart from his press's primary output of Greek scholarly texts, representing an ambitious experiment in vernacular illustration and typographic design. His son Paolo published the second edition in 1545.
