periwinkle is more explicable when contextualized
in the atmosphere of philological experimentation and the search for obscure Latin terms
reported by Fera. The search, in which Benedetto was an active participant, for new Latin
terms for simples in non-normative Latin sources resulted in a confusio nominum, with
multiple terms referring to the same plant. As a result, botanical indices were developed
which correlated the various alternate terms for plants.
