Master Mercury Draft

Alchemical Interpretation
The central alchemical principle identified by the BL copy's anonymous annotator (Hand B).
The BL alchemist wrote on the flyleaf verso: 'verus sensus intentionis huius libri est 3um: Geni et Totius Naturae energiae & operationum Magisteri Mercurii Descriptio elegans, ampla' -- the HP's true sense is the 'full and elegant description of the energy and spirit of the whole nature, and of the operations of Master Mercury.' This reading positions mercury (quicksilver) as the catalytic principle uniting all elements, consistent with d'Espagnet's Enchiridion Physicae Restitutae and with Isaac Newton's corpuscularian alchemy.

Why It Matters for the Hypnerotomachia

The BL alchemist wrote on the flyleaf that the HP's true sense is 'Magisteri Mercurii Descriptio' — the description of the operations of Master Mercury. This reading positions mercury as the catalytic principle uniting all elements in the HP's narrative.

Why It Matters in Scholarship

Russell (2014, pp. 159-160) identifies the Master Mercury declaration as the key to the BL alchemist's interpretive framework. The declaration's consistency with d'Espagnet's Enchiridion Physicae Restitutae (1623) helps date the annotations and situate the annotator within a specific alchemical tradition.
