Grotesque Draft
Aesthetic Concepts
Ornamental style combining human, animal, and vegetable forms in fantastical hybrids, described and depicted in the HP.
The HP describes and illustrates grotesque ornament — the hybrid decorative style rediscovered in the grottoes (grotte) of Nero's Domus Aurea in Rome around 1480. Poliphilo encounters carved surfaces where human figures merge with acanthus scrolls, animal forms sprout architectural elements, and natural and artificial forms intertwine. The HP is among the earliest printed works to depict and theorize this ornamental mode, which became one of the defining visual vocabularies of Renaissance decoration.

Why It Matters in Scholarship
The grotesque style was rediscovered in the grottoes of Nero's Domus Aurea around 1480. Dacos (1969) provides the standard account of its Renaissance revival. The HP's grotesque passages situate the book within this moment of ornamental rediscovery.
