Prince of Thieves and the Heritage Hero
1991 and the visitor centre
- In one line
- Costner returns from the Crusades with a Moorish companion and an American accent, Alan Rickman steals the film, and meanwhile Robin Hood completes his transformation into a regional tourism asset.
- Core claim
- Two things happen at once in the late twentieth century. On screen, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991, Kevin Reynolds) reframes the legend around personal and familial motivation rather than social justice - a shift Stephen Knight criticises directly - while adding a Muslim companion, Azeem, as a gesture toward a wider medieval world. Off screen, Dobson and Taylor document the outlaw's transformation 'from medieval outlaw into heritage hero': Nottingham tourism, the Sherwood visitor centre, the statue, the festival.
- Canon
- Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991); Robin Hood: Men in Tights (1993); Robin Hood (BBC, 2006-2009); Ridley Scott's Robin Hood (2010); Robin Hood (2018). Alongside: Dobson and Taylor, 'Merry Men at Work' (Northern History, 1997).
- Tone
- Gothic-grim on screen, brightly commercial off it. Increasingly self-serious, which is the complaint.
- Robin is
- A returning crusader with a dead father and a personal vendetta; and, simultaneously, a brand licensed by a county council.
- The politics
- Displaced. Knight's point is that motivating Robin through family injury removes the social argument entirely; the heritage industry has a commercial interest in a Robin who is beloved and uncontroversial.
- What it suppresses
- The ballad Robin's cruelty and comedy alike. The recurring critical complaint about post-1991 adaptations is that they are joyless.
- Period
- 1991 - present
Game hooks
Roguelike. Run modifier HERITAGE. Meta-layer over all other run types: after each completed run, the run is 'commemorated' - turned into a visitor attraction whose gift-shop version is then what future runs inherit as their canon. A slow, funny corruption mechanic in which your own past play becomes the tourist-board Robin.
Visual novel. Present-day frame: the player works for a Nottinghamshire heritage body preparing an exhibition, negotiating between the scholarship, the film rights, the county's revenue targets and a local re-enactment society that knows the ballads better than anyone.
