Thesis 11>53
'ly' is the scholastic marker for a term under discussion ('the term ...'), not an independent word; kept as printed.
English
Given that for light to come into being is nothing other than to share in light, the Cabalists' reading fits very well: in the phrase Let there be light, 'light' should be taken as the shining mirror, and in Light was made, as the mirror that does not shine.
'shining mirror' and 'mirror not shining' are symbols of the sixth and tenth sefirot respectively, tied by Farmer's note to Genesis 1:3 and thesis 28.20 (farmer1998:27555).
Discussed in
- (author to be confirmed from front matter), Erkenntnistheorie und christliche Kabbalah: Das Paradigma des Pico della Mirandola (n.d.)
- Chaim Wirszubski, Pico della Mirandola's Encounter with Jewish Mysticism (1989)
Farmer's cross-references
