Pico della Mirandola, Conclusiones (1486) SectionsThe thirteen condemnedScholarshipMethod

Method

This edition presents the 900 Conclusiones that Giovanni Pico della Mirandola had printed at Rome on 7 December 1486 for a disputation that never took place, with the thirteen theses censured by a papal commission in 1487 marked as such. The text follows Stephen Farmer's edition (Syncretism in the West, 1998), whose numbering is used throughout (7.2 = second thesis according to Averroes; 4>13 = thirteenth theological thesis according to Pico's own opinion); collation against the 1486 print is pending.

Translations are original and are checked for sense against Farmer's, which is in copyright and is not reproduced. Commentary is written from research packets assembled by a deterministic harvest of the scholarly corpus (78 works): every place a scholar cites a thesis by number or quotes its Latin is recorded with a file-and-line locator, and every sentence of commentary ends with such a locator. A second reader re-finds each quotation and each dated claim before an entry is marked verified.

State at build: 861 verified entries, 39 drafts awaiting verification, 0 theses with Latin only. Depth is tiered: the condemned theses and those most discussed in the scholarship receive full commentary first.
