The Grail Made Christian
From a serving-dish to the vessel of the Passion
- In one line
- Robert de Boron gives Chretien's mysterious graal a genealogy running back to the Crucifixion, and the Cistercian-flavoured Queste then uses it to fail almost every knight at Arthur's court.
- Core claim
- The Grail is not originally Christian. Chretien's graal is a serving vessel carried in a procession he never explains. Within a generation Robert de Boron identifies it as the Last Supper dish in which Joseph of Arimathea caught Christ's blood, and the Vulgate Cycle turns the quest into an allegory of election in which the fellowship's best knight is disqualified by his love affair.
- Canon
- Robert de Boron's Joseph d'Arimathie (c. 1200) and Merlin; the Vulgate / Lancelot-Grail Cycle (c. 1215-1235), especially the Queste del Saint Graal; Wolfram von Eschenbach's Parzival (c. 1205), where the Grail is a stone; Perlesvaus; the Middle English Joseph of Arimathie; Henry Lovelich's History of the Holy Grail.
- Tone
- Exegetical and severe. Hermits appear constantly to explain what the last adventure meant. Adventure is reclassified as temptation.
- Arthur is
- A king who loses his court to a quest he cannot join. The Grail costs Arthur the fellowship before Mordred ever raises a sword.
- What it suppresses
- The pleasure of Chretien's irony. Lancelot, the best knight of the secular tradition, is systematically demoted in favour of the virgin Galahad.
- Period
- c. 1200 - c. 1240
- Where scholars disagree
- Pauphilet (1921) argued for Cistercian authorship of the Queste; later scholarship (e.g. Karen Pratt) has qualified this, noting the theology is broadly monastic rather than specifically Cistercian. Whether the Grail has a Celtic prehistory (a cauldron of plenty) or is a purely literary invention of Chretien's remains contested; Juliette Wood is sceptical of the Celtic-survival case.
Game hooks
Roguelike. Run modifier QUESTE. Party-wide: most of your knights are meant to fail, and the run is scored on how honestly they fail. A hermit NPC appears after each floor and reinterprets the floor you just cleared, retroactively changing what your loot was worth. Only one character build can reach the final floor and you may not have it.
Visual novel. Confessional structure. Each chapter ends with a hermit's gloss on the player's choices; the gloss is the scoring screen. Sin is bookkeeping.
