The Quintessence (the Fifth Element) is the subtle, ethereal substance that permeates the universe.

Unlike the four corruptible earthly elements, the quintessence is eternal and incorruptible. Alchemists sought to extract it from matter (often starting with wine to produce alcohol) as a universal panacea.
