Another name for the Major Arcana cards, from the Italian 'trionfi' (triumphs).
The original term for the extra cards added to a standard playing card deck to create tarot. In the 15th-century Italian game of trionfi, these cards served as permanent trumps that could beat any suited card. The term 'trump' in English card games derives from 'triumph' via tarot.
Significance
Using 'trump' rather than 'Major Arcana' connects the cards to their gaming origins and reminds us that tarot was a card game for 350+ years before it became a divination tool.
