Jean-Baptiste Alliette (1738-1791), the first professional tarot cartomancer.

A Parisian print seller who became the first person known to make a living from tarot card reading. He published the first tarot divination manual (1783), created the first deck designed specifically for divination (1789), and founded the first school of tarot study (1790). He coined the term 'cartonomancie' and was the first to number the Fool as 0.

Significance

Etteilla is the bridge between the gaming tradition and the divinatory tradition. He transformed tarot from a game played for entertainment into a practice performed for paying clients.
