Philip K. Dick and the Umbrella of Light

Angus Taylor · 1975 · Scholarship

Philip K. Dick and the Umbrella of Light is a critical monograph by Angus Taylor, published by T-K Graphics of Baltimore in 1975, with illustrations by C. Lee Healy. Parts of the work appeared earlier in the British journal Foundation, No. 4, July 1973, in an article titled "Can God Fly? Can He Hold Out His Arms and Fly?"

This is one of the earliest book-length critical studies devoted to Dick's work, published during Dick's lifetime. Taylor's study examines Dick's fiction through the lens of his philosophical and theological concerns, with the title referencing the imagery of light and transcendence that pervades Dick's later work. The original Foundation article from 1973 places Taylor's criticism alongside other early academic engagements with Dick in British science fiction criticism.

T-K Graphics was a small press that published several science fiction critical works during the 1970s. Taylor's monograph represents a pioneering effort to treat Dick's work as worthy of sustained critical analysis at a time when science fiction was still struggling for academic respectability. The work is now a collector's item and an important document in the history of Dick criticism.
