SF Commentary No. 1 is the inaugural issue of Bruce Gillespie's landmark Australian science fiction critical fanzine. Published from Melbourne, Australia, SF Commentary became one of the most important venues for serious critical discussion of science fiction literature, including some of the earliest sustained critical engagement with Philip K. Dick's work.
The first issue establishes the fanzine's identity as a publication that does not need an editorial, instead letting its articles, reviews, and comments speak for themselves. The OCR text is heavily garbled due to the original publication's typewritten format, but the issue contains articles, reviews, and critical commentary typical of the serious fan criticism that SF Commentary would become known for.
SF Commentary ran for decades and published contributions from major critics and authors in the science fiction field. Gillespie's championing of Dick in its pages, alongside other authors like Ursula K. Le Guin and Stanislaw Lem, played a significant role in building Dick's international critical reputation, particularly in Australia and the United Kingdom.
