Rosicrucian PKD Sources

Unknown (compiler) · Scholarship

Rosicrucian PKD Sources is a 32-page research document compiling esoteric and Rosicrucian source materials relevant to understanding Philip K. Dick's metaphysical framework. The document draws extensively from the VALIS appendix, the Tractates Cryptica Scriptura, beginning with Tractate 10 in which Apollonius of Tyana, writing as Hermes Trismegistos, states that 'that which is above is that which is below,' which Dick interprets as describing a holographic universe.

Tractate 11 presents what Dick calls the great secret known to Apollonius of Tyana, Paul of Tarsus, Simon Magus, Asklepios, Paracelsus, Boehme, and Bruno: that humanity is moving backward in time and the universe is contracting into a unitary entity. This compilation traces the lineage of esoteric thought that Dick drew upon, connecting his science fiction to centuries of hermetic, Rosicrucian, and Gnostic philosophical traditions.

The document is a valuable research tool for scholars investigating the sources of Dick's late metaphysical thought, particularly the syncretic blend of Gnosticism, hermeticism, Neoplatonism, and modern physics that characterizes the Exegesis and the VALIS trilogy. It demonstrates the depth and specificity of Dick's engagement with esoteric traditions that he wove into his fiction and philosophical writings.
