This fifty-one-page document, compiled and edited by Linda Castellani (copyright 2008), presents the correspondence between Philip K. Dick and Linda Levy under the title 'A Dark-Haired Girl & PKD: Letters from the Heart, the Spleen, and the Funnybone.' Castellani, who is Linda Levy, structured the collection into sections labeled 'PKD, Side One' through 'PKD, Side Four,' plus 'Odds and Ends,' each representing different phases or thematic dimensions of the correspondence. The preface establishes the collection as the first offered for sale by one of Dick's 'dark-haired girls,' with Castellani presenting the original pieces of paper on which the correspondence was written, supplemented by contextual narrative. Each letter is shown with one page partially obscured by puzzle-piece imagery, chosen to reflect what Castellani calls 'the puzzle that was the man himself.' Beyond the letters, the collection includes Castellani's personal copy of The Dark-Haired Girl, two Georg Grosz prints signed by Grosz in pencil, the only known prints of three photographs Dick took of Castellani, and the November 6, 1975 issue of Rolling Stone magazine containing an article on Dick that he sent her a dollar to purchase. The preface references a Paul Giamatti biopic then in development and expresses Castellani's desire to present her account before the film version solidified public perception. She describes Dick as multidimensional, capable of love and longing, meanness and vindictiveness, playfulness and humor, and a brooding darkness that led to outbursts of physical and emotional violence toward women he professed to love. The document quotes from Dick's December 1, 1972 letter to Roger Zelazny, in which Dick describes his search for the dark-haired girl and mentions compiling 127 pages of letters sent to his agent as a sort of journal, originally titled 'The Dark-Haired Girl: A Search for the Authentic Human Being.' The collection provides a unique first-person perspective on Dick's personal relationships during the early 1970s, a period of intense personal upheaval and creative productivity.
