The Short Happy Life of the Brown Oxford and Other Classic Stories (Collected Stories of Philip K. Dick, Volume 1)

Philip K. Dick · 1952–1955 · Short Stories · PKD-authored

The Short Happy Life of the Brown Oxford and Other Classic Stories is Volume 1 of The Collected Stories of Philip K. Dick, covering his earliest published fiction from 1952 to 1955, including some previously unpublished stories. The volume features a preface by Philip K. Dick, a foreword by Steven Owen Godersky, and an introduction by Roger Zelazny, and is dedicated to Dick's memory (1928-1982).

The collection contains 25 or more stories including Beyond Lies the Wub, Stability, Roog, The Little Movement, The Gun, The Skull, The Defenders, Mr. Spaceship, Piper in the Woods, The Infinites, The Preserving Machine, Expendable, The Variable Man, The Indefatigable Frog, The Crystal Crypt, the title story, The Builder, Meddler, Paycheck, The Great C, Out in the Garden, The King of the Elves, Colony, Prize Ship, and Nanny.

Dick's own preface defines science fiction by first stating what it is not: it cannot be defined simply as a story set in the future. This characteristically thoughtful opening reflects his lifelong engagement with genre definitions and the nature of speculative fiction. The volume captures Dick at the very beginning of his career, writing prolifically for the magazine market while developing themes of suburban unease, technological anxiety, and reality's instability that would define his entire body of work.
