The Minority Report and Other Classic Stories (Collected Stories of Philip K. Dick, Volume 4)

Philip K. Dick · 1954–1964 · Short Stories · PKD-authored

The Minority Report and Other Classic Stories constitutes Volume 4 of The Collected Stories of Philip K. Dick, gathering short and medium-length fiction from 1954 to 1964, including some previously unpublished works. The volume features an introduction by James Tiptree, Jr. (the pen name of Alice Sheldon), one of the most celebrated science fiction writers of the twentieth century.

Tiptree's introduction opens with the question: "How do you know you're reading Philip K. Dick?" She identifies strangeness as the first and most pervasive quality of Dick's work, describing it as the quality that kept her searching SF catalogs for more by him. The publisher's note describes Dick as the writer many thousands of readers consider "the greatest science fiction mind on any planet."

Stories in this volume include "Service Call," "Stand By," "The Days of Perky Pat," and the title story "The Minority Report," which was later adapted as the 2002 Steven Spielberg film starring Tom Cruise. The Philip K. Dick Award, given annually to a distinguished work of science fiction, and the Philip K. Dick Society devoted to studying his works are both referenced, indicating the volume's publication after Dick's death in 1982 and the growth of his posthumous reputation.
