Niekas Issue 11

Ed Meskys, Felice Rolfe, and various contributors · c. 1965-1966 · Fan Publications

Niekas Issue 11 is an issue of the long-running science fiction fanzine published to satisfy the activity requirements of N'APA (National Amateur Press Association). Edited by Ed Meskys and Felice Rolfe, the fanzine operated from addresses in Berkeley and Palo Alto, California, placing it squarely in the San Francisco Bay Area science fiction community that included Philip K. Dick.

The editorial notes indicate Meskys was considering leaving the Bay Area, with a possible departure at the end of July or mid-August, potentially traveling via the Loncon (London Worldcon). Copies were available for contribution of material, trade, letter of comment, or 35 cents per issue. A second copy of traded fanzines sent to Felice Rolfe was requested.

Niekas was a prominent and Hugo Award-winning fanzine of the 1960s and 1970s that frequently featured discussion of science fiction including Dick's work. At 77 pages, this issue represents the substantial, zine-format publications that served as the primary critical discourse venue for science fiction before the establishment of academic journals. Its Bay Area roots connect it directly to Dick's geographic and social community.
