Arthur & Robin

Matter of the Greenwood Figure

William Robehod

Summary
A Berkshire fugitive recorded in 1261 as William son of Robert le Fevre, and in the 1262 memoranda roll as 'William Robehod'. Someone deliberately changed the name. This is the earliest firm evidence that 'Robin Hood' already meant something to a clerk - i.e. evidence for the legend, not for the man.

Note
The single best-known datum in Robin Hood historiography, and it points away from a historical Robin rather than toward one.
