Lawyer, vegetarian, ferocious textual critic and radical democrat with Jacobin sympathies. His Robin Hood (1795) was the first systematic collection of the ballads and its preface supplied the modern legend's politics and its biography. Died insane, reputedly after attempting to burn his manuscripts.
