Revival, Screen and Afterlife
Tennyson to Monty Python to the origins industry
- In one line
- After two centuries of neglect Arthur returns as a Victorian moral problem, then as a film genre, then as a permanent argument about whether he was real.
- Core claim
- The modern Arthur is a reception phenomenon. Malory returns to print in 1816-17 after nearly two centuries out of it; Tennyson's Idylls make Camelot a vehicle for Victorian anxieties about sexual conduct and public duty; the twentieth century turns the cycle into cinema, children's literature and pseudo-archaeology in roughly equal measure.
- Canon
- Tennyson's Idylls of the King (1859-1885); the Pre-Raphaelites; Twain's Connecticut Yankee (1889); T. H. White's The Once and Future King (1958); Boorman's Excalibur (1981); Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975); Bradley's The Mists of Avalon (1983); the entire 'was Arthur real' publishing genre.
- Tone
- Self-conscious. Every modern Arthur is an argument about earlier Arthurs.
- Arthur is
- Whatever the present needs: a model of continence, a colonial allegory, a pacifist tragedy, a joke about coconuts, a Sarmatian cavalry officer.
- What it suppresses
- Usually the ugliness of the medieval material - the slaughter of the May babies, Arthur's incest with Morgause, the Gest's bodycount - though the grimmer modern adaptations invert this and suppress the comedy instead.
- Period
- 1816 - present
- Where scholars disagree
- Littleton and Malcor's Sarmatian/Scythian thesis (From Scythia to Camelot) is not accepted by mainstream Arthurian scholarship but is influential in popular culture, notably the 2004 film King Arthur. Hutton represents the sceptical historian's position on Arthur, druids and the modern pagan reception of both.
Game hooks
Roguelike. Run modifier RECEPTION. Meta-layer: the player picks which century is telling this run, and the century rewrites the rules, the art, and the moral scoring of identical actions. Killing a peasant is a neutral event in ARCHAIC, a scored sin in QUESTE, and a comedy beat in 1975.
Visual novel. Frame story in a modern archive. The player is cataloguing Arthurian materials and each document opens into a playable scene rendered in that document's idiom. The player's catalogue notes are the ending.
