Matter of Britain Figure

'Nennius'

Summary
The name traditionally attached to the Historia Brittonum, on the authority of a prologue now generally judged a later addition. Whoever compiled it gave Arthur his twelve battles and called him dux bellorum. Modern scholarship usually refers to the text rather than the man.

Where scholars disagree
The attribution to Nennius is doubted; David Dumville's work on the manuscript tradition is the standard reason why.
