Arthur & Robin

Matter of the Greenwood Figure

Fouke le Fitz Waryn

Summary
A real Marcher lord (d. 1258) whose Anglo-Norman prose romance has him dispossessed by King John and living as a forest outlaw. Three episodes are close analogues of the Gest: an ambush on merchants with a truth-or-consequences test, the king lured into the forest and captured, and a brother begging to be killed.
