# Project: Illuminatus! Trilogy Knowledge Portal

**Location**: `Planned / not yet scaffolded`
**Type**: Digital Humanities Knowledge Portal

## Overview

A scholarly knowledge portal for *The Illuminatus! Trilogy* that treats the novel as both literature and a contested esoteric archive. The portal should help readers move between narrative geography, conspiracy networks, religious references, and Crowleyan/Qabalistic correspondences without collapsing the book's deliberately unstable interpretive field.

This is not just a reading aid. It should function as a research environment for literature scholars, religious studies scholars, and digital humanities users who want to trace how the trilogy stages parody, occult doctrine, political satire, and epistemological uncertainty in the same textual space.

## Core Content

- **Interactive Place Atlas**: An annotated map system for real and fictional locations, with each location linked to scenes, characters, motifs, and chapters.
- **Hover Summaries**: Brief role summaries that explain why a location matters in the narrative without overloading the reader.
- **Click-Through Reading Pane**: A separate text frame that opens behind or beside the map when a location is selected, showing longer excerpts, commentary, and linked interpretive material.
- **Esoteric Crosswalks**: CrowleyDB-connected references for Thelema, ceremonial magic, Qabalah, sigils, correspondences, and occult organizations.
- **Narrative Networks**: Cross-linked entities for characters, factions, books-within-the-book, conspiracies, and recurring motifs.
- **RAW Section**: A Robert Anton Wilson biography and bibliography hub, plus summaries for his books, internet writings, zine publications, and interview media.
- **RAW Hub**: [project_illuminatus_raw.md](project_illuminatus_raw.md) is the author archive index for the section.

## Map Architecture

The portal should not rely on a single map alone. It should support a portfolio of maps, each one tuned to a different reading task.

### Map Types

- **Master Atlas**: a full-series map that can show all books on one canvas for broad spatial browsing.
- **Book-Specific Maps**: separate interactive maps for individual books when the geography matters enough to deserve its own frame.
- **Historical Illuminatus Maps**: a dedicated map family for the Historical Illuminatus cycle, especially a Europe-travel map following the characters across the continent.
- **Thematic Maps**: optional maps organized by scene type, faction, occult reference, or plot mode rather than chronology alone.

### Map Behaviors

- Hovering a location should reveal the book-specific role of that place.
- Clicking a location should open the relevant page or passage without losing the user in the atlas.
- Map layers should be filterable by book, character group, time period, and interpretive theme.
- If useful, the same place can appear on multiple maps with different annotations.
- The Master Atlas may show every book at once, but book-specific maps should remain available for close reading.

### Historical Illuminatus Example

The Historical Illuminatus cycle should include a map focused on the movement of characters through Europe. This map should privilege travel routes, cities, crossings, and historical pressure points over a generic point map. It can be used to trace how political history, secret societies, and revelation move across space.

## Content Architecture

The frontend should follow the same `card` / `page` split used across the other database viewers:

- **Card layer**: short index-card summaries for fast scanning, search results, map popups, and entity browsing.
- **Page layer**: long-form essay pages for close reading, interpretive synthesis, and scholarly annotation.

Each entity type should therefore have a concise card and a deeper page version where needed.

## Editorial System

The writing standard for the portal is defined in [project_illuminatus_styleguide.md](project_illuminatus_styleguide.md).

The context-loading strategy is defined in [architecture_context_engineering.md](architecture_context_engineering.md).

The RAW ontology for interpretation is defined in [concept_raw_ontology.md](concept_raw_ontology.md).

These two documents are the operating instructions for all future content generation. They exist so the model can move from the smallest useful context packet to the larger scholarly frame only when needed.

### Card Sections

- **Characters**: terse identity, narrative role, major alliances, and primary esoteric associations.
- **Concepts**: compact definition, key occurrences, interpretive stakes, and CrowleyDB/Qabalah links.
- **Plot Summaries**: short chapter- or arc-level summaries for fast orientation.
- **Routines**: brief analytical cards treating recurring sequences as Burroughs-style routines, with notes on repetition, control, contagion, scripting, and disruption.
- **Focused Plot Pages**: cards that point to deeper pages such as `Detective Story`, `Discordian Initiation`, `Conspiracy Cartography`, or `Occult Instruction Manual`.

### Page Sections

- **Character pages**: longer interpretive essays on figures, factions, and symbolic functions.
- **Concept pages**: extended treatments of esoteric, literary, and philosophical concepts.
- **Plot-focus pages**: long essays organized by arc or mode of reading, such as `Detective Story` and `Discordian Initiation`.
- **Routine pages**: deeper essays that analyze repetitive textual sequences as Burroughsian routines, including voice, compulsion, breakdown, and recursion.
- **Map pages**: longer interpretive essays attached to a specific atlas or map family, such as a Europe-travel map for the Historical Illuminatus cycle.

### RAW Section Structure

The RAW area should act like a mini-portal inside the portal:

- **Biography card**: a short card summarizing Robert Anton Wilson's life, publication profile, and relation to the trilogy.
- **Biography page**: a longer essay page with timeline, literary context, counterculture context, and esoteric context.
- **Book cards**: one card for each RAW title, with the card acting as the browsing layer and the page carrying the full summary.
- **Book pages**: detailed content summaries, major themes, and linked ideas for each title.
- **Internet writings**: cards/pages for essays, blog fragments, archived web pieces, and public online texts.
- **Zine publications**: cards/pages for zines, magazine appearances, and underground print culture items.
- **Video interviews**: cards/pages for filmed interviews, talks, and lecture footage.
- **Audio interviews**: cards/pages for podcasts, radio appearances, and audio archives.
- **Placeholder protocol**: if a source cannot be verified or full material is not yet available, add a stub like `[Need to add more interview detail]` or `[Need to add more zine metadata]` rather than leaving the slot empty.
- **Count discipline**: the RAW bibliography should preserve source-specific counts instead of forcing one total; official sources vary depending on whether they are counting books, in-print titles, or excerpted works.

Use the official RAW and Hilaritas pages as the first seed list for titles and media:

- Hilaritas Press book catalog and audio pages
- The RAW site's `Excerpts from RAW Books` page
- The RAW site `About RAW` bio page
- The RAW site `Site Map` / archive navigation for additional web writings and media

## Interface Concept

The page should be structured as a spatial reading environment:

1. The map remains the foreground navigational layer.
2. Hovering a location reveals a concise tooltip with the location's narrative function.
3. Clicking a location opens a recessed reading frame behind the map or in a side panel, keeping the user oriented in the spatial system.
4. The reading frame should include tabs or sections for:
   - textual passage
   - scholarly commentary
   - esoteric correspondences
   - linked places and people

The same pattern should extend across the rest of the portal:

- list views show `card` summaries first
- selection opens a richer `page` view
- each `page` should contain internally navigable sections rather than one undifferentiated essay block

This should feel like a DH atlas rather than a standard article page.

## Scholarly Frame

- **Literature First, Esotericism Second, Never Flatly Separated**: The portal should let literary analysis and religious studies analysis coexist without forcing one to subsume the other.
- **Interpretive Caution**: The book's conspiratorial voice should be represented as a literary strategy and a cultural phenomenon, not as a truth claim.
- **Crowleyan Specificity**: When the trilogy references Thelema, the O.T.O., Abrahadabra, Nuit, Hadit, or related material, the portal should show the exact contextual layer: parody, quotation, transformation, or serious occult genealogy.
- **Qabalistic Structure**: Sephirotic or tree-of-life references should be linked to an interpretive glossary that distinguishes Wilson's usage from more orthodox esoteric systems.

## Data Model

- `locations`: canonical place entries with aliases, coordinates, chapter references, and narrative role
- `map_sets`: named collections of locations, passages, and layers for a specific book or interpretive purpose
- `passages`: text excerpts tied to locations and scenes

- **Wiki Memory System**: project summaries, concept notes, and entity pages inside `C:\dev\wiki`

## Next Steps

- Build the location ontology and decide how fictional, real, and hybrid places should be represented.
- Define the map family structure: master atlas, book-specific maps, and thematic maps.
- Build the Historical Illuminatus Europe-travel map as the first specialized atlas.
- Define the hover-summary template so it stays brief, readable, and academically precise.
- Create the click-through reading pane component with separate tabs for text, interpretation, and esoteric cross-links.
- Seed the RAW biography and bibliography with an initial title list, then expand to media archives as sources are confirmed.
- Draft the first RAW book cards and pages using the length requirements in the style guide.
- Use progressive context packets for all new content so cards, pages, and source notes can be generated independently.
- Establish the CrowleyDB join strategy so occult references can be reused across the broader ecosystem.
